Gibraltar-based Petfre, operator of the Betfred.com and Oddsking.com brands, has agreed to pay a penalty of £240,000 for breaching online slot regulations in the UK.

The penalty relates to a selection of online slot games which failed to meet the requirements of the Remote Technical Standards in the United Kingdom.

The technical standards were amended in January of this year to include new game design rules which require operators to display players’ net spend in real time. The new standards also prohibit audio or visual celebrations of returns which are less than or equal to the amount staked.

“Features that impair a consumer’s ability to make informed decisions are not appropriate and pose a clear risk,” said John Pierce, director of enforcement at the Gambling Commission.

“While we acknowledge the operator acted swiftly to remove the affected games, this enforcement action should serve as a clear signal to the wider industry to review and strengthen their compliance practices — and to ensure that gameplay is fair and consumers are not exposed to unnecessary risk.”

Petfre (Gibraltar) will pay a penalty of £240,000 for breaching the Remote Technical Standards.

This is the second time Petfre (Gibraltar) has faced regulatory action, having been fined £2.87 million in 2022 for social responsibility and anti-money laundering failures.
