New daily deposit limit of €700 will officially come into force on 26 March as the Ministry of Consumer Affairs places player protection at the heart of gambling regulation
Spain’s gambling regulator will introduce a nationwide deposit limit for online gamblers as part of its efforts to create a safer gambling environment for players.
As first reported by Gaming Intelligence Español last week, the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) will officially introduce the new deposits limits next March.
The new model establishes across-the-board limits of €700 per day, €1,750 per week, and €3,300 per four-week period.
Unlike the previous framework, where limits were calculated individually for each sports betting or online casino website, the new tool aggregates deposits made across all accounts held by the same individual.
Upon reaching any of these thresholds, the system automatically blocks the receipt of further funds on any authorized platform.
Online players retain the option to voluntarily adjust or remove these limits, provided they first complete a protocol that includes enhanced information regarding the risks associated with gambling.
Any changes will take three business days to come into effect, while any increase in the deposit limit can only be requested once every three months.
The system will be overseen by the DGOJ, which has developed a technological tool capable of coordinating the information required to verify compliance with these limits in real time.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs said that this will ensure more effective oversight, avoiding unnecessary information exchanges between different operators, while guaranteeing greater protection for players’ personal data.
The Ministry noted that nearly one-third of active players participate on multiple platforms simultaneously, underscoring the need for new preventive and protective measures to serve as an additional, complementary layer to the existing deposit limit systems managed by individual operators.
The system is currently in a testing phase with mandatory implementation scheduled for 26 March 2027, athlough the functionality is already available for players to access.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has also introduced a new Player Portal platform, which provides a centralized review of online gaming activity across licensed operators in Spain.
The tool allows players to review their consolidated history of deposits, wagers, winnings, and losses, as well as access aggregated statistics.
The platform aims to empower players to better understand, monitor, and control their own gaming habits by providing easy access to information regarding their personal activity.
Players can also verify the gaming accounts linked to their identity, facilitating the early detection of potential identity theft, the setting of spending alerts, and the downloading of annual activity certificates.
