The German Sports Betting Association (DSWV) has spoken out against a new tax on betting shops which is based on the size of each venue, claiming that the additional tax could force licensed operators out of the market to the benefit of illegal operators.

The new tax will be introduced by local authorities in the towns of Hagen and Gronau, both in the state of Nordrhein-Westphalia, and will see betting shops charged a tax of €200 per 20 square metres of retail space - alongside the existing tax on all bets placed.

However not all retail outlets will be liable to pay the tax...
