The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has launched an investigation into Germany’s controversial sports betting concession process after a Bavarian judge asked the Luxembourg court to assess the legality of the regulations.

The European Court will now assess the legality of the State Treaty on Gambling, which looks to be on the point of collapse after damning rulings from the Administrative Courts in Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, and the Higher Administrative Court of Hamburg. The courts have cited concerns about the state regulatory body Glücksspielkollegium, questioning its transparency and compliance with national and European law.
