US authorities have jailed two brothers for their role in leading an illegal international gambling operation which used the internet and toll-free telephone lines to accept high-stakes sports bets from customers across California.

Jan Harald Portocarrero and Erik Portocarrero were both arrested in June 2013 following a two-year investigation which saw the FBI employ wiretaps and undercover agents to infiltrate the organization and uncover the defendants’ illegal gambling and extortionate debt collection activities.

According to the superseding indictment and admissions in court, the brothers started their illegal gambling business, under the Macho Sports brand, shortly after the 1995 Super Bowl.
