A draft federal sports betting bill that aims to provide oversight of state-regulated sports betting in the United States has been released.

The bill acknowledges the rights of states with respect to sports betting and notes that the expansion of the legal market following the Supreme Court ruling in May represents an opportunity to significantly reduce the illegal sports wagering market.

It adds, however, that sports wagering affects interstate commerce, giving Congress an important role in setting minimum standards and providing law enforcement with additional authority to target the illegal sports wagering market, as well as bad actors in the growing legal sports wagering market.
