Western Australia seeks new Gaming and Wagering Commission chair

22nd December 2023 7:44 am GMT

The Western Australia Government has confirmed that Michael Schaper has resigned as chair of the Gaming and Wagering Commission (GWC).

Schaper will step down from his role as state regulator in February due to other commitments, having serving less than one year of his three-year tenure.

He was hired as an independent chair by the GWC in April in response to the findings of the Perth Casino Royal Commission (PCRC), which investigated the suitability of Crown Perth to continue to hold a casino gaming licence and examined the appropriateness of the state's casino regulatory framework.

“I would like to thank Dr Schaper for his contribution to gambling regulation during his time as chair of the Gaming and Wagering Commission,” said Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia. “I am confident the good work that has been progressed will continue and I look forward to working with the GWC and its new chair in 2024."

A replacement chair will be appointed by the Minister in 2024.
