Total lottery sales for the 44 countries that make up the European Lotteries (EL) climbed by 4.2 per cent in 2011 to reach €81.5bn, according to the latest figures from the association.
The association said that the continued strong growth in European lottery sales helped to achieve a record breaking €25.0bn contribution to society and state budgets in 2011, equal to approximately 70 per cent of gross gaming revenues generated by EL members.
