Online poker giant PokerStars has described its record-breaking tournament day on Sunday as the biggest in online poker history, as the operator delivered more than $39m in prizes to players.

Sunday (May 21st) saw more than 1,275 tournaments take place on PokerStars, coinciding with the operator's Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) Main Event.

The record prize pool was significantly higher than the $28m guarantee, with SCOOP events delivering more than $29.5m.

The High Stake Main Event went further than its $5m guarantee to reach a $6.9m prize pool, with more than $1.3m set aside for the winner and $960,000 for the runner up of the tournament, which concludes Tuesday.

“Thank you to all our players who participated in our tournaments making it possible for us to break these records,” said Severin Rasset, PokerStars’ director of poker innovations and operations. “Being able to offer the biggest day in the online poker history is a victory for everyone in poker and we’re delighted that so many of our players joined us to make this a reality.

“We are proud to have been able to provide so many winning moments to so many of our players and we’re looking forward to providing even more for a long time to come.”

Another millionaire is expected in the High Stakes Event 1 Phase 2 tournament, which has $1m set aside for the winner and $700,000 for second place.

The record total prize pool of $39m surpasses the previous biggest day for online tournament poker pay outs on May 22nd of last year, which paid out $35m.
