Tabcorp and Tatts lose out as court backs Victoria in levy fight

Australian gaming giants Tabcorp and Tatts Group will have to pay a combined AUD$85m in levies from their gaming operations in Victoria after the Court of Appeals upheld an appeal by the state government.

The levy, known as the Health Benefit Levy (HBL), was first introduced by the Victorian government in July 2000 and applied to each electronic gaming machine operated by Tabcorp and Tatts in Victoria.
