The government of Hong Kong has invited the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) to submit a proposal to implement basketball betting.
The plan to expand the HKJC’s betting offering to include basketball was announced in the government’s 2025-26 budget and could generate up to HK$2 billion (approx. €247 million) in additional tax revenue each year, helping to offset some of Hong Kong’s budget deficit.
The HKJC believes there is a strong public interest in allowing basketball betting in order to stem the rising tied of illegal gambling, with the club estimating that illegal basketball betting reached somewhere between HK$70 billion and HK90 billion last year.
The operator plans to submit a detailed proposal shortly and said that it looks forward to working closely with the government to “implement this important policy initiative as soon as possible.”
The HKJC is currently authorised to offer betting on horse racing and football.
