New Jersey’s decision to seek clarification in federal court on its move to deregulate sports betting could open the door for numerous other US states to decriminalise the activity, ending the exclusive rights of the four US states that are authorised to offer legal sports bets.

Under the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), enacted in 1992, it is unlawful for states except those with pre-existing sports betting laws to engage in sports betting.
