Portugal has moved closer to opening its online market to foreign operators after its Council of Ministers approved a bill establishing a legal framework for the regulation of online gambling.

The legislation will now come into law once the Portuguese president, Aníbal António Cavaco Silva, signs the bill.

The Legal Framework for Games and Online Gambling (RJO) is designed to ensure the protection of minors and the vulnerable, prevent fraud and money laundering, prevent criminal behaviour and combat match-fixing and corruption in sports.
