Japanese government approves casino legislation

Japan could see its first casinos after a bill legalising integrated gaming resorts was passed by the Upper House of the country's parliament.

The approval gives lawmakers a twelve-month window in which to establish licensing conditions and develop a regulatory framework, with the first casinos expected to open in the early 2020s.

Warwick Bartlett of gaming consultancy GBGC predicts that the first venues could open their doors as early as 2020, in time for the Tokyo Olympics.
