The Supreme Court of the United States has delayed a decision on whether to hear an appeal by New Jersey against the federal sports betting ban, asking the incoming administration of president-elect Donald Trump for its views on the issue.

New Jersey's request to appeal against a lower court ruling preventing it from repealing the ban on sports betting was considered by the Supreme Court Tuesday alongside a host of other cases.

More than 70 of those cases were rejected by the court, but it deferred its decision on hearing New Jersey's appeal in order to hear the views of the federal government from the Solicitor General.
