Oregon Lottery player wins $1.33 billion Powerball jackpot

10th April 2024 8:48 am GMT

The fourth largest Powerball jackpot in the game’s history has been won by an Oregon Lottery player who matched all six numbers to win $1.326 billion.

The jackpot win from last Saturday’s Powerball draw comes just weeks after a New Jersey lottery player won $1.128 billion on Mega Millions.

Final ticket sales pushed the jackpot beyond its earlier estimate of $1.3 billion to $1.326 billion, making it the fourth largest in the Powerball game and eighth largest among US lottery jackpot games.

“On behalf of Powerball, I’d like to congratulate the winner of this $1.326 billion jackpot,” said Powerball Product Group chair Drew Svitko, who also serves as Pennsylvania Lottery executive director. “Winning the Powerball is not just about hitting the jackpot, it's about the power to make dreams a reality and to create positive change in the world.

“Lottery games, like Powerball, generate proceeds that are used to do so much good work in local communities across the country. Thank you to our players and retailers for helping us make a lasting impact from this jackpot run.”

The winner will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $1.326 billion, or a lump sum payment of $621 million. Both prize options are before taxes.

If the winner selects the annuity option, they will receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5 per cent each year.

Across the US (including District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico), the Powerball drawing produced more than 4.5 million winning tickets, including seven tickets that matched all five white balls to win $1 million prizes. There were also 81 tickets that won $50,000 prizes, and 26 tickets that won $150,000 prizes.

This was the second time the Powerball jackpot has been hit this year, after a jackpot of $842.4 million was won on New Year’s Day in Michigan.

“I want to congratulate the winner on this life changing moment,” said Oregon Lottery director Mike Wells. “No one in Oregon has ever won a prize on this scale, and it’s very exciting for our staff and players. Even if you aren’t holding the winning ticket, all of our players support programs and services statewide that receive Lottery dollars.”

The winner has a year to come forward and claim their prize. Per state law, players in Oregon, with few exceptions, cannot remain anonymous.

The largest Powerball prize previously won in Oregon was a $340 million jackpot in 2005.
