Queensland rejects federal government’s sports lottery plans

The Australian state of Queensland has rejected proposals by the federal government to introduce a new lottery to fund elite sport, arguing that tying the country's long-term sporting future to gambling would be "short sighted".

The sports lottery was first mooted in May by Sports Minister Greg Hunt in an effort to copy the success of Team GB at the most recent Olympic Games, and arrest the decline in Australia's performances in elite competitions.
