Flutter Entertainment’s FanDuel has taken over as operator of Washington DC’s sports betting business.

FanDuel’s sports wagering platform went live on Monday for District residents and visitors, replacing the DC Lottery’s GambetDC brand.

“With FanDuel’s launch, DC residents and visitors will have access to a best-in-class sports wagering platform,” said Frank Suarez, executive director of the Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG). “FanDuel’s entry into our market brings not only a reliable, customer-friendly sports wagering experience to the nation’s capital, but it also includes guaranteed revenue that will be used to fund vital city programs.”

FanDuel’s sportsbook platform will be available to players over the age of 18 within the geographic boundaries of the District of Columbia, except for specific areas where gambling is prohibited.

These restricted areas include a two-block radius surrounding designated Class A facilities such as Audi Field, Capital One Arena, Nationals Park, and St. Elizabeths East Entertainment and Sports Arena, as well as all federal lands, including the National Mall, White House, Capitol, Congressional office buildings, East Potomac Park and Rock Creek Park.

In addition to the improvements to user experience, the new partnership with FanDuel brings immediate financial benefit to the District, including an initial $5 million payment within the current fiscal year.

GambetDC was the leading brand in Washington DC’s regulated sports betting market in 2023, although it has underperformed since its launch online in June 2020.

In February, sports wagers in Washington DC were down by 18 per cent to $12.0 million as GambetDC maintained its leading position in the market with wagers of $5.3 million, ahead of Caesars’ $3.3 million and BetMGM’s $2.6 million.
