Wagering on BetBuilder and Player Props helps OpenBet post highest ever platform activity with 175 million bets placed during the tournament

Sportsbook technology provider OpenBet has reported record wagering during the FIFA World Cup with over $3 billion generated in betting stakes.

Marking its biggest ever betting event, the supplier processed more than 175 million bets across its global platform customers during the record-breaking tournament.

England’s run to the semi-finals helped to generate standout volumes across OpenBet’s UK-facing customers, with the Norway quarter-final drawing almost 5 million pre-match bets, with the game against Argentina close behind at 4.65 million.

OpenBet’s newly expanded BetBuilder and Player Prop offering also drove a significant proportion of growth over the course of the tournament.

New ‘either player to score’ and ‘player to be fouled’ markets were offered for the first time, and 23 million Player Prop bets were processed, up 130 per cent on Qatar 2022. The final contested by Spain and Argentina drew 831,000 BetBuilder bets, 39 per cent more than the showpiece four years ago.

OpenBet noted that the tournament revealed a marked shift in how fans construct their bets.

Ten of the 20 most repeated bet combinations included a Player Goals or Player Stats selection, compared with four in 2022, none of which contained player stats. Selections on player stats markets grew almost fivefold on the last World Cup.

In-play betting also grew as the tournament progressed, rising to around one bet in six through the knockout rounds, with live bets carrying significantly higher average stakes than pre-match.

“A World Cup is one of the defining moments for our industry, and this was the largest betting event our platform has ever supported,” said OpenBet president Nikos Konstakis. “What stands out beyond the numbers is the extent to which player behaviour continues to evolve. Fans are no longer simply backing a result, they are building their own narrative around individual players, and our expanded BetBuilder and Player Prop offering met that demand while delivering the high-margin products operators need.

“Sustained peak load across a six-week tournament is different to managing a single event, and our platform handled it extremely well. The highest-profile operators trust us with the events that matter most, and this was the largest of them all.”
