Germany’s Merkur Group has strengthened its presence in Spain through the acquisition of eleven arcades and its entrance into the country’s hospitality installation segment.
Continuing its international growth trajectory, Merkur Slots Spain has acquired eleven arcades from Operjoku in the Basque Country, while its subsidiary in Palma de Mallorca has agreed to take over operations of gaming machines in 108 bars previously serviced by Operkale in northern Spain.
Implemented in cooperation with Spanish distributor Merkur Dosniha, the acquisition represents the company’s entry into Spain’s highly profitable hospitality installation segment.
“Spain is a market of great importance and long-term potential for the Merkur Group,” said Meik Sellenriek, management board member of Merkur Operations at Merkur.com. “This acquisition clearly underlines that. We are proud to welcome around 50 new employees to the company and look forward with confidence to strengthening our market position.”
Dominik Raasch, management board member of Merkur Games at Merkur.com, added: “There are strong synergies between the Merkur Group’s business divisions. The successful acquisition of Operjoku and Operkale demonstrates how effectively we leverage these synergies to support our sustainable growth.
“We are particularly pleased to now offer our innovative gaming machines and games in our own arcades and bars in the Basque Country – one of Spain’s most economically powerful regions.”
Merkur currently operates 28 venues across Spain. In addition to the eleven locations in the Basque Country, further branches are located in Palma de Mallorca, Madrid and the provinces of Navarre and Cantabria.
