The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has banned three student-athletes for breaching gambling regulations.
The three athletes, Mykell Robinson, Steven Vasquez and Jalen Weaver, were found to have conspired to place bets on their own games and each other’s games, and to have provided information that helped others bet on their games during the 2024/25 season.
Two of the three athletes are also said to have manipulated their own performances to ensure that certain bets won.
Robinson and Weaver represented Fresno State in men’s basketball and Vasquez played at San Jose State.
The ban on the three players follows an investigation by the NCAA enforcement team which was prompted by suspicious betting alerts from a sports betting integrity monitor.
During the investigation, the enforcement team discovered that Robinson and Vasquez were roommates at Fresno State during the 2023-24 academic year. In January 2025, the pair discussed over text how Robinson had planned to underperform in several statistical categories during one regular-season game.
Robinson, Vasquez and a third party bet a combined $2,200 on Robinson for his under-line performance in those categories, resulting in a payout of $15,950.
Robinson also placed 13 daily fantasy sports over-line and under-line prop bets, totalling $454, on parlays that included his own performance. Robinson did not win on all of the bets but did collect $618 on one bet.
In the same season, Robinson placed multiple bets on Weaver, including two bets made before a game in December 2024, after the two had exchanged information about their respective bets. Weaver also placed a $50 prop bet on himself, Robinson and a third student-athlete, and won $260.
Robinson and Vasquez were uncooperative with the NCAA enforcement team throughout the investigation.
The three cases were resolved through negotiated resolutions in coordination with the student-athletes’ schools, in accordance with infractions process operating procedures.
All three student-athletes are now permanently ineligible for NCAA competitions and have been released from their respective teams. They are also no longer enrolled at their previous colleges.
