Lawmakers in Curaçao have approved the new National Ordinance on Gambling (LOK) that will regulate offshore gambling operations.

The LOK was approved by the parliament of Curaçao late-Tuesday by a vote of 13-6 and aims to bring about more effective regulation of the thousands of online gambling websites that serve international markets under a Curaçao licence.

The new regime regulates all forms of online gambling under the supervision of the Gaming Control Board, which will be renamed the Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA).

Licences are available to companies that are registered in Curaçao and the government expects to bring in more than €20 million annually in licence fees under the new regime.

The adoption of the new law caps off a difficult transition period which included BC.Game’s exit from Curaçao and allegations of misconduct against senior officials.
