US state attorneys generals have been asked to endorse a letter to Congressional Judiciary Committee Leadership seeking clarification that internet gambling is prohibited under the Wire Act.

The letter has been signed by John Boehner, Speaker, US House of Representatives; Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader, US House of Representatives; Harry Reid, Majority Leader, US Senate; and Mitch McConnell, Minority Leader, US Senate.

It requests that Congress “carefully consider” the policy implications of the recent reversal of the US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) interpretation of the Wire Act as it applies to internet gambling.

The letter argues that the impact of the DOJ’s opinion (that the Wire Act only bans sports betting and does not apply to online lottery sales) effectively opens the door to the spread of internet gambling, which will have a “potentially significant” impact on state and local law enforcement.
