House Committee approves online gambling legislation

The United States has taken a step closer to overturning the highly contentious Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) after the House Financial Services Committee voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to approve legislation to licence and regulate online gambling.

The Committee voted 41-22 in favour of HR2267, Rep. Barney Frank's Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act, after considering eighteen amendments which were mostly aimed at strengthening consumer protection under the legislation.
