England international footballer Kieran Trippier has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the Football Association’s betting rules.

The alleged breaches occurred last July when Trippier moved to Spain’s Atletico Madrid from English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for £20m.

The FA confirmed that Trippier’s charges charges specifically relate to Rules E8(1)(a)(ii) and Rule E8(1)(b), the same charges brought against former Liverpool and England international Daniel Sturridge, who is currently serving a four-month ban after being found guilty of providing his brother with inside information on a potential move from Liverpool to Sevilla in 2018.

Trippier has until 18 May to provide an official response to the FA.

“I have fully complied with the FA’s investigation over the past several months on a voluntary basis and will continue to do so,” he said in a statement. “I want to make it clear that while a professional footballer I have at no stage placed any football related bets or received any financial benefit from others betting.”
