New policy requires online gaming customers to assess their gambling at certain checkpoints

Finland’s Veikkaus is strengthening its responsible gambling policies with the introduction of “checkpoints” for online players.

The checkpoint system is meant to reduce the potential harm caused by gambling by requiring players to discuss their gambling behaviour with a Veikkaus representative when certain thresholds are reached.

For 18- and 19-year-olds, the first loss checkpoint is €4,000. For 20- to 24-year-olds the first loss checkpoint is €8,000, while players over the age of 25 will trigger the first checkpoint at €24,000.

When the checkpoints are reached, players must speak to a Veikkaus representative to assess their gambling behaviour. If they decide to continue gambling they must agree a new loss checkpoint.

Susanna Saikkonen, director of sustainability at Veikkaus, said: “Our aim is to identify harmful gambling better than before by using real-time data and to provide customers with preventive care communications. Our customers may encounter informative, awareness-raising messages while using our services. In addition, we make thousands of care calls every year.

In the discussion, the customer’s situation is assessed in accordance with a predefined operating model. If a decision is made to continue playing, a new loss checkpoint can be agreed together with the customer.”

The checkpoint system for online gaming will come into force on June 9 and does not apply to Veikkaus’ land-based slots and table games.
