Canadian province follows Ontario’s lead in transitioning to a regulated, multi-operator model
Alberta’s new regulated iGaming market went live on Monday with 22 operators approved to launch their services in the Canadian province on day one.
The Alberta iGaming Corporation celebrated the launch of the newly regulated iGaming market alongside industry partners, stakeholders and government officials at Edmonton’s Royal Glenora Club yesterday.
“Alberta is taking an important step forward with the launch of a regulated iGaming market,” said Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, who introduced the iGaming Alberta Act (Bill 48) in the spring of 2025. “Our focus has been clear from the start: to protect Albertans, especially young people, and ensure that those who choose online gaming can do so in a responsible environment.”
Under Alberta’s regulated market, operators are required to put player protection and social responsibility at the forefront of their operations.
Albertans will have access to responsible gaming tools, including financial and time limits, gaming activity statements, and a provincewide self-exclusion program across all regulated online platforms, casinos and racing entertainment centres.
Operators must also intervene when signs of high-risk gambling behaviour emerge, and are prohibited from targeting minors or vulnerable individuals through advertising and marketing.
“Alberta has built a thoughtful and collaborative iGaming framework that reflects the highest standards of player protection and responsible gaming,” said Alberta iGaming Corporation CEO Dan Keene. “Alberta’s market sets clear expectations for operators and creates a responsible, competitive environment for the industry. The Alberta iGaming Corporation is well prepared to conduct and manage the regulated market on behalf of the province.”
Under the new regulations, 20 per cent of net revenue from approved online gambling sites will be reinvested into Alberta’s General Revenue Fund to support programs and public services that Albertans rely on every day.
Three per cent of total gross gaming revenue will be reinvested directly – two percent to First Nations, and one percent into social responsibility initiatives, which includes research on gambling addictions and supporting mental health treatment programs.
Moving forward, the Alberta iGaming Corporation will conduct and manage the commercial market, while the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) regulates it.
“We will continue to work with operators to strengthen compliance, develop social responsibility programming, and improve player protection tools,” concluded Keene. “This will only be possible through continued collaboration, confidence, and strong participation on a regulatory playing field.”
More than fifty operators have so far been approved in Alberta, although only 22 websites went live on day one, while a whole host of suppliers have launched their online casino games with operator partners.
