The Australian Wagering Council (AWC) has called on authorities to introduce a national framework for licensing and regulating betting services, and bring an end to the current prohibition on online in-play betting.

The call was made in the AWC’s submission to the government’s Review of the Impact of Illegal Offshore Wagering, which recommended that a regulatory body be established to license operators, and set and enforce national consumer protection rules and problem gambling standards.

It also recommended legislative support for uniform rules on consumer protection, using existing customer law wherever possible, and recognition that the proposed Australian Association of National Advertisers’ Wagering Advertising and Marketing Communication Code should be supported, and reviewed after a period if necessary.
