2020 World Series of Poker postponed over public health concerns

21st April 2020 10:45 am GMT

The 51st annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) has officially been postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prestigious poker tournament was due to begin on 26 May at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas but has now been pushed back to later in the year, with the exact new dates yet to be determined.

“We are committed to running the World Series of Poker this year but need additional time to proceed on our traditional scale while prioritizing guest and staff well-being,” said WSOP executive director Ty Stewart.

“In the interim, official WSOP competitions are expected to be played online this summer, and we will soon announce details of an expanded series of tournaments to be played on WSOP.com and through partnership with international operators, which will allow players to chase WSOP glory from their homes.”

In 2019 the WSOP attracted 187,298 entrants from 118 countries and awarded more than $293m in prize money, including $10m for Main Event winner Hossein Ensan.
