A study commissioned by the European Union has recommended that member states introduce a "centralised distribution system" to ensure they can grab a share of money earned from betting on sports.

The Study on Sports Organisers’ Rights in the European Union was carried out by the TMC Asser Instituut, a Dutch knowledge and research centre primarily funded by the Dutch Ministry for Education, Culture and Science, and administered by the University of Amsterdam.

It examined, from an EU and national legal perspective, the possibility for sports organisers to license their rights to events and leagues beyond the media sector, namely in the betting sector.
