The four major US sports leagues have filed a motion in federal court to block New Jersey’s plans to decriminalise sports betting, as Senator Raymond Lesniak prepares to introduce legislation to repeal the sports betting law entirely.

The NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB, alongside the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), have filed a suit that describes the New Jersey attorney general’s decision to decriminalise sports betting as “a blatant attempt” to circumvent a 2013 injunction prohibiting New Jersey from regulating sports betting. The leagues maintain that regulated sports betting will lead to corruption in their competitions.
