Wisconsin sports betting situation heats up

Wisconsin has been at the centre of some key developments in the US sports betting sector in April.

First, Governor Tony Evers signed a bill to allow Wisconsin’s Native American tribes to offer online sports betting.

Then Attorney General Josh Kaul filed complaints against prediction market operators alleging they flout Wisconsin law, to which the CFTC has filed a counter-complaint.

Blask Index data suggests that Bovada and BetOnline are the leading offshore sports betting brands in Wisconsin over the last year, accounting for more than a third of the index.

Polymarket dominates Blask Index in the prediction markets category for Wisconsin with 71 per cent share of search, followed by Kalshi on 25 per cent.

Nevada

Nevada’s gaming revenue climbed by 12 per cent in March to $1.43 billion, driven by the highest slot machine revenue since December 2024. The strong sector-wide performance in March took Nevada’s gambling revenue to $4.01 billion in the first quarter of 2026.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island set a new record for iGaming wagering in March with a 23 per cent year-on-year rise to $161.9 million. Sports betting fell by 15 per cent to $37.2 million for the month, driven by a 17 per cent decline in mobile betting to $31.6 million.

This compared to a 3 per cent drop in Rhode Island’s land-based gaming revenue in March to $57.6 million. In the first quarter of 2026, gaming revenue at the state’s two land-based casinos fell by 5 per cent to $155.2 million.

The Rhode Island Lottery also recorded a drop for March, with total sales down 4 per cent year-on-year to $25.5 million. This was driven by a 38 per cent drop in Powerball sales, as well as lower sales of Keno and Numbers.

South Dakota

Wagering at South Dakota’s casinos increased by 9 per cent in March to $145.5 million, including record sports bets of $1.6 million. Adjusted gross revenue for tax in March was $12.6 million and earned the state $1.1 million. 

Michigan

Michigan’s total casino revenue in March was down by 4 per cent to $112.3 million. Gaming revenue came to $111.5 million and sports betting added revenue of $810,000. For the first quarter of 2026, Michigan’s three commercial casinos in Detroit had a 1 per cent fall in revenue to $316.7 million.

iGaming dwarfed Michigan’s commercial gaming market, earning more in March than the commercial casinos did in the first quarter. iGaming revenue was up 24 per cent year-on-year to a record $322.1 million in March, with online sports betting earning $50.0 million.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire’s sports betting grew by 5 per cent in March to $81.3 million, with sports betting gross win rising 14 per cent year-on-year to $7.7 million. New Hampshire’s betting win was 11 per cent higher in the first quarter at $28.8 million.

Iowa

The Iowa Lottery grew sales by 5 per cent to $39.1 million in March, taking its quarterly sales total to $113.5 million. Total operating expenses for March were $34.1 million, including $19.4 million in instant game prizes, and the lottery distributed $5.4 million to state causes.

Colorado

Gaming revenue at Colorado’s 33 land-based casinos was down by 2 per cent in March to $98.4 million, with falls in both slots and table games. But despite the revenue fall in March, first quarter gaming revenue was up 6 per cent to $282.9 million.

Ohio

March was the best month of the first quarter for Ohio’s video lottery terminals (VLT) with revenue of $134.1 million. The average daily win per machine in Ohio was $429, a year-on-year rise of 1 per cent.

Arkansas

Arkansas’ gaming revenue fell by 11 per cent in March to $58.7 million, caused by a loss in mobile sports betting as FanDuel and DraftKings entered the market for the first time. Revenue from slot machines was $60.6 million and table games earned revenue of $5.9 million, while sports betting had a loss of $7.8 million.

Massachusetts

Gaming revenue at Massachusetts’ three casinos grew by 3 per cent in March to $108.5 million, with $107.8 million in gaming win and $706,566 in retail sports betting win. March’s strong revenue took Massachusetts’ total gaming revenue in the first quarter of 2026 to $298.4 million.

Total online sports handle for March fell by 9 per cent year-on-year to $690 million, but Massachusetts’ online betting gross win increased by 23 per cent to $66.4 million. DraftKings took half of the monthly gross win on $33.5 million.

Red Rock Resorts

RRR posted a 1.9 per cent increase in net revenue for the first quarter of 2026 to $507.3 million, including a 0.9 per cent increase in Las Vegas revenue to $499.5 million. Net income for the first quarter of 2026 was down 3.6 per cent year-on-year to $82.72 million.

VICI Properties

VICI raised its full year guidance after growing net income by more than 60 per cent the first quarter of 2026. VICI’s first quarter revenue climbed 3.5 per cent to $1.02 billion and drove a 60.4 per cent increase in net income to $885.95 million.

MGM Resorts International

MGM Resorts posted record results for the first quarter of 2026, as net revenue increased by 4 per cent to $4.45 billion. Revenue from Las Vegas Strip resorts climbed 0.2 per cent, regional operations revenue rose 2 per cent, and revenue from MGM China grew 9 per cent.

Rush Street Interactive

RSI reported record results for the first quarter, with revenue climbing 41 per cent year-on-year to $370.4 million. This included online gaming revenue growth of 39 per cent and online sportsbook revenue growth of 47 per cent.

Caesars Entertainment

Caesars reported a 2.7 per cent increase in net revenue to $2.87 billion for the first quarter of 2026, including record results from its Caesars Digital business, where revenue rose 11.6 per cent to $374 million.

Sportradar

New York-listed Sportradar reported an 11 per cent increase in revenue to €346.5 million for the first quarter of 2026, although foreign currency fluctuations pushed the company to a loss for the period.
