The UK Gambling Commission has issued a warning to British consumers about online gaming website

The operator purports to be licensed by the Gambling Commission and lists a fictitious licence number on its website to support the claim, along with a company registration number belonging to a residential property management firm.

It appears to be related to an actual Gambling Commission licensee, Smart TV Broadcasting, whose licence was suspended this week on suspicion that it is " unsuitable to carry on the licensed activities".

The betowen website states: "Betowen is fully regulated and licensed in the United Kingdom in accordance with the UK Gambling Commission under licence number 000-002715-R-103240-006. is operated by Smart Gaming Group Malta Ltd and powered by Net Entertainment, which has a Class 4 License in Malta (MGA/CL1/574/2009).

In its warning, the British regulator said that this operator is not licensed by the Gambling Commission despite claiming that it is on its website.

"BetOwen is of considerable concern and the Commission is taking action," said the regulator. "In the meantime consumers are being advised not to deposit money with this website."
