Netherlands gaming regulator proposes new rules

The Netherlands Gaming Authority is seeking views from industry stakeholders on proposed safer gambling rules.

The new policy rules are in response to a report published by the gaming authority in September 2023 which highlighted shortcomings in the implementation of duty of care requirements by operators, particularly the speed of intervention.

The new policy rules introduce a requirement that operators contact players for proof of income when deposits exceed €700 in a calendar month, with a lower limit of €300 for players aged 18 to 24.

Operators will also have to monitor players in real-time in order to recognise signs of problem gambling within one hour.

The public consultation on the new rules closes on 1 February.

In related news, licensed operators in the Netherlands are now subject to gaming tax of 30.5 per cent as of 1 January, a one percentage point increase that was first announced in October 2023.
